Energy Change Institute Open Day

Greetings from the ANU Energy Change Institute Open Day at the Australian National Institute in Canberra. The program includes tours of the Fusion Power research laboratory, "Big Dis" Solar Thermal plant and Solar Photovoltaics. In his introduction Professor Ken Baldwin pointed out that the institute covers a wide range of research. In my own work I look at how to use energy use of, and by computers and telecommunications. A poster on my teaching green computing is on display at the day.
Students of the ANU Master o Energy Change can  enroll in my course COMP7310: ICT Sustainability.

Professor Baldwin mentioned how ANU met with staff from the Department of Defence to provide advice on optimizing energy use for both Australian bases and those deployed operationally. As I have a background in defence and some of my students are military officers, I was invited along to talk about reducing the electricity use of computers. Computer equipment now is a significant proportion of the diesel fuel use by deployed military bases. Reducing kilowatt-hours save fuel, which reduces the truck convoys needed to supply a base.
