Never Mind the Pedagogy Do Dialogue


Greetings from the TEAL Room at the Inspire Center at University of Canberra, where Helen Keegan, University of Salford, is speaking on Open: Social: Mobile: Connected. She will be speaking at ANU College of Law,  Liz Allen Room (135), 12:30 pm, Friday 15 November 2013, or you can read her blog.

One valuable suggestion to bridge conventional and on-line education is to use the university course codes as hashtags (I guess mine would be #COMP7310). This then allows what the student does on-line outside the course website to be identified.

Dr Keegan makes the point that boundaries are blurring between education and social activities on-line.  She suggests that first year university students are not read to perform on-line and leaving it until their last year is too late. She suggests students be encouraged to present themselves as a whole rounded person on-line, not hiding behind a formal professional persona. I am not so sure this is a good idea. There are different levels of formality in different cultures. Students and clients may not feel that they are getting a professional service if there is too much informality.

Helen suggests leaving space in the curriculum for creative developments. I suggest that the plans would have to at least a place-marker to say what was to be done, in general.
