In 2020 Australian higher education made a sudden pivot online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A question for Australian policy makers is how much of this will remain online. However, there is no way to tell from the
statistics published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as it doesn't record this. What they do have is a category for "Correspondence Courses". However, this shows as only a tiny fraction of export income from education over the last few years, so it is clearly not a proxy for online learning, as almost all students have been learning online.
