Atlassian, an Australian IT company, offer training though Atlassian University. However, the use of the term "University" is restricted by Australian law to accredited institutions. So I wrote to Atlassian suggesting they might like to use a more generic term, such as "Atlassian Institute", or make it clear the organisation is not based in Australia, and not a registered university. The reply I received was disappointing (I removed the name to save embarrassing the individual):

Didn't get an answer from Atlassian, so I referred the question as to if it is okay for them to operate "Atlassian University" to the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).

ReplyDelete"Hi, Tom!
I appreciate your patience and thank you for waiting this out.
Finally, have to share with you some good news! I have now received a response from the relevant team. They confirmed that university.atlassian.com does not have a separate Australian domain. Based on the link you provided, it specifically says Australian domain names (i.e. ending in .au) are regulated. But, since our domain is .com in which we are not using an Australian domain name and thus are not violating the regulation.
I hope this answers your query and please let us know if you have any additional questions, concerns, or comments, or if we may be of assistance at any point in the future.
Again, we can't thank you enough for your patience and support on this matter.
Have a great day and stay safe!"
