Australia Vocational Teachers Must Be Qualified to Teach

New regulations governing vocational education and training (VET) in Australia came into force on 1 January 2016. VET teachers must now be formally qualified in teaching and the subject they are teaching.

The  Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) reminded Registered Training Organizations (RTOs) that from 1 January 2016, trainers and assessors must hold either:

• A Diploma or higher level qualification in adult education."

The old TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is no longer accepted.

Those doing only assessment can have just a TAESS00001 Assessor Skill Set.

Importantly, it is no longer sufficient for trainers and assessors to have ‘demonstrated equivalence’: they must have a formal qualification. As well as the teaching qualification, they must also have a qualification in the subject being delivered or assessed, to the level being delivered or assessed.
