Charting the Future of Australian Higher Education in Sydney 11 & 12 June

I will be chairing part of the Higher  Education stream of EduTech_Au in Sydney 11 & 12 June. You can read about my previous visits and talks at EduTechs. These events can be a little overwhelming with the number of parallel stream and the scale of the exhibition. It helps to do your homework, using the website, or the app, to select who to listen to when, and book visits to vendor stands.

What is on in Sydney 11 to 12 June?

I booked for EduTech Asia 2025 in Singapore 5 to 6 November, but then realised there is another conference much closer to home: EduTech_Au in Sydney 11 & 12 June. Last year at the Singapore event Professor Angela Lee from Sunway University Malaysia, and I talked about AI and education in a "silent disco" fireside chat. I don't know if Sydney is having equivalent activities. Any suggestions as which speakers?

EduTECHAU is on 17-18 August

EduTECHAU is on 17-18 August. This is a large scale commercial conference held in Australia and the region, on educational technology. I have talked at it in Sydney, Brisbane & Singapore. It had to move online last year and the organizers have made the best attempt at a commercial online conference I have seen so far. As well as the usual formal presentations, they have round-tables, with a half dozen or so delegates and a host. The round-tables are short and then people switch tables, like speed dating. This allows you to discuss the topic with someone, not just listen to a speech.

EduTECH in Sydney 8 and 9 June 2017

The EduTech 2017 is on at the new exhibition centre in Sydney 8 and 9 June. I enjoyed speaking and chairing at the Tertiary Education IT Leaders stream of EduTech in Brisbane last year. This event has a free exhibition as well as streams for educators (and parents) from K to Vocational/University and Librarians.

This year I will be taking a less active role* and probably will just go to Ed 2030 (11:20am) and Systems Innovation (11:40am). Apart from that I will be wandering around the exhibition seeing what to blog for Higher Ed Whisperer. Anyone with something new and interesting for the blog, please let me know.

* I have volunteered to be on standby if they need a chair or speaker.

Minority of Universities Have On-line Content Plan

Greetings from EduTech in Brisbane where I am chairing day two of the Tertiary Education IT Leaders stream. Bec McSwiney, Associate Director (Online Marketing), University of Southern Queensland pointed out that less than half of Australian organizations have an on-line content plan. A show of hands in the room indicates the numbers are even lower for tertiary institutions, perhaps 4%.

At the conference yesterday I talked on "IT and the Future of Tertiary Education".

How CIOs are vital to the Future of Tertiary Education in Australia

Education is Australia’s fourth largest export industry. However, higher education needs on-line to remain competitive. Meantime campuses are evolving into networked places to live and be entertained, with learning spaces more like an airport business lounge than a classroom.

• Blended Learning: E-learning by stealth has taken over,
• Wireless Campus: Lecture theaters replaced by wifi learning spaces,
• Education as Entertainment: Students demand a full bandwidth experience,
• Education as a business: Move on-line or go under.
