Citing Sources in Course Material

Recently I was asked about citing sources in course material, including assessment question. If we are asking students to cite their sources in assignments, it seems reasonable for teachers to do the same. In the course "ICT Sustainability" I have two assignment questions. These correspond to the two learning objectives from the course, which in turn are designed to align with two skills definitions in an international standard. As a result the wording of the assignments and objectives are very similar and obviously also have some similarity to the standard:
  • Assignment 1: "Evaluate the sustainability of IT services, devices and day-to-day operations of an organisation, including the carbon footprint and e-waste ..."
  • Learning Objective 1: "Evaluate the sustainability of IT services, devices and day-to-day operations of an organisation, including the carbon footprint and e-waste ..."
  • Skill Description: "The evaluation of the sustainability of operational or planned IT services, devices and day-to-day operations such as travel ..." From: Skill SUAS, Category: Business change, Subcategory: Business change management, SFIA (2009).
The skills definitions are formally cited in the introduction to the course, where the objectives are listed. I don't point out that each objective corresponds to one skill definition, as I thought that was obvious, but perhaps I should. Also I don't point out the correspondence between the objectives and assessment questions, as that is just part of normal course design (it is made explicit in some of the course design documentation).
