Research to Product

Greetings from the  InnovationACT: Research to Impact Panel at the Canberra Innovation Network. Damith Herath nominated a coin operated robot he built at school as his first innovation. Inger Newburn described her Thesis blog as a career saving strategy. Elizabeth McGrath nominated her space research project.


I asked the panel if enterperur skills should be in the curriculum. The panel's consensus was this would work for undergraduates but not research students.

This event was part of Innovation ACT a competition for tertiary students.

Innovation ACT Pitches at CBRIN in Canberra

Greetings from the Innovation ACT pitch night at the Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN). This is a competition for teams of Australian National University students to come up with a business idea. The winner gets business support via CBRIN.  

The first pitch is for an App to find a bar with a short queue and good music. Many student pitch ideas are about food, drinks and entertainment, but this one is a bit different. 

The second pitch was about the "literacy crisis". This is less usual topic. The presentation spent a little long criticizing NAPLAN, which isn't designed to improve student outcomes, only measure them (and based on overseas experience is likely to make the situation worse, better). The actual product is a literacy analytics platform for schools. The catch with this is who will pay, and who will care? Individual teachers, and public schools can't buy such a product. The obvious market is private schools, but the pitch will have to be improve NAPLAN scores, not overtly undermine it.

The third pitch was on climate change action. The idea is to make many small changes to behavior. But it was not clear what these changes were, or how they were to be accomplished, apart from  Flash Mobs (very 2003). It sounded like a marketing pitch for a generic green-washing campaign.

The fourth pitch was for a pet medical registration service. This had a cleaver feature I have not seen in any offering before. But I ought be biased, as I mentored the team. ;-)

The fifth pitch was also about education, with an astronomical simulator to foster children's interest in science. A plus for this team is that they appeared in science week with their potential customers. But as with all education products, the question is who will pay?

The last pitch was for a navigation system for cyclists, wheelchair users, and pedestrians with special needs. The obvious question is how to pay for this, but the team had an answer for that.

InnovationACT 2019 Team Hunt Tuesday

InnovationACT 2019 starts Tuesday in Canberra, with a Team Hunt. This is a ten-week entrepreneurship program, for teams of two to five ANU students (plus a possible "Wildcard entry"). Teams can work on social enterprises, or for-profit ideas.  Teams can share from $50,000 in grants,to develop their idea. I have mentored several successful teams in the past (including "OK RDY"), and volunteered again this year.

OK RDY App to Connect Students with Mentors and Organisations

Canberra start-up "OK RDY" have announced they signed up Telstra and the Australian National University (ANU) to pilot an app for connecting students with mentors and organizations. The issue of how students get real world experience and non-technical “soft” skills is something which has recently come up with repect to cybersecurity professionals.

I am mentoring a team of students in the Innovation ACT competition who are refining OK RDY's product offering:
"OK RDY is a mentorship and skilled-volunteer matching platform with an initial focus on connecting students to professionals and organisations; helping improve employability, diversity and cultural outcomes. ...

OKRDY aims on bridging the gap between university students and corporations. The average university student pursues academia, however, beyond the books they often lack guidance to help them pave their way through this constantly changing corporate world. That’s where the OKRDY platform intervenes, it is a student mentor matching service which matches students to potential mentors who work within their relevant industry. The service will be web-based and will be on all the accessible platforms available to your average student. ..."

History of Innovation ACT in Canberra

Greetings from the Australian National University in Canberra, where renewable energy entrepreneur and rocket scientist, Dr Lachlan Blackhall, is recounting the history of Innovation ACT. This started in 2007 as a start-up competition for ANU students (Innovation ANU) and  opened to students at other Canberra higher education institutions in 2009.

Apparently at the first launch event I was so surprised by the large amount of prize money being offered, I asked the distinguished senior academic doing the launch: "Is this a scam?". After ten years of completions, I have concluded it is not a scam.

Students form teams and learn about how to turn an idea into a product or service. To give them incentive, there are prizes. The prizes are now in kind help with furthering their business idea, rather than just cash.

Innovation ACT has helped normalize the idea at Canberra's universities that it is okay to aspire to start a business, rather than just work for one, or be a researcher. With the popularization through media and many government and business programs on
entrepreneurship, perhaps it is time to remind everyone this is not easy.

here is a belief in some of the entrepreneur community that formal higher education is not needed any more and school kids should just learn on their own and go into business. I challenged Steve Baxter, best know for Shark Tank, at at River City Labs in Brisbane. Steve suggested that a tech entrepreneur could obtain business advice and training, but a business person without the needed tech training would have more difficulty. I think I managed to get him thinking that some formal training in both tech and business was worthwhile.

Currently I am tutoring ANU Techlauncher students, mostly computer science, with a few engineers and some interns. The students are learning what are referred to as "soft skills" but are hard, particularly for STEM students. Students who have mastered very technical computer skills soon discover that planning, management, estimating and communication are not easy. Competitions such as Innovation ACT help with this.

Large Scale Desktop Wireless Charging


Greetings from the Australian Academy of Science Shine Dome in Canberra, where the finalists in the Innovation ACT competition are giving their pitches to a panel of judges. One team which stood out was Pixelated Induction (PI) with large scale inductive charging.

PI claim to be able to deliver standard wireless charging for mobile devices, but on a scale suitable for airport lounges and cafes.

It occurred to me that one launch customer could be the military and other safety and security organizations, who need to have charged devices ready at all times. In 1996 I took a helicopter ride into the Coral Sea where USS Blue Ridge, was coordinating a joint US-Australian exercise. Personnel arrived on-board, like me, put their portable devices on long benches and then tried to get power so they could run the exercise. The result was a tangle of wires. Wireless charging would make this a bit easier.

Another IACT project with military and security application is Wildlife Drones. These are small robot helicopters (UAVs), with directional radio antennas. The drones automatically track radio tags attached to wildlife. The same technology could be used by the military to search for terrorists, improvised explosive devices and locating friendly forces. Drones could be launched from the ground, ship or aircraft. Wildlife Drones also need to consider how their technology could be misused: equipped with explosive and programmed with a mobile phone ID, the drone becomes an autonomous flying bomb, which will search for the phone and then detonate.

Education and Skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

InfoSys have released a study "Amplifying Human Potential: Education and Skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution" (18 January 2016). This presents the results of a survey of young people's attitudes to education and work. It suggests that the "Fourth Industrial Revolution" will require both technical (STEM) and soft skills. The study finds Australians less enthusiastic about this. However, just to be clear, this is not a study of tech skills, just attitudes to skills. I suggest that Australians not wanting to code mobile apps for startups shows good common sense. Your chance of earning a living this way is minimal and it is the 21st century equivalent of sewing t-shirts in a sweat shop.

Similar points to the InfoSys stydy were made by Brandenburg, Taboadela  and Vancea (2015) in describing the ERASMUS Impact Study. Employers wanted graduates who could work in multi-national teams and solve problems.

It is useful to have a grounding in STEM and business skills. But working in a start-up is much like putting all your money on a roll of the dice (except you have about ten times the chance of winning at dice). A job in a large company, with a regular pay-check is not to be turned down lightly.

Last year ANU started offering IT students the option of a start-up for their group project. Students still have the option of doing a software development project for an existing company, or government agency, but they can instead opt to start their own business. This is called "ANU TechLauncher" and works with the existing "Innovation ACT" business planning competition for Canberra's university students.

A start-up project as part of education, I suggest, is a useful learning experience so the students can experience failure in a safe environment. This is, in effect, a real world version of the fictional Kobayashi Maru test of Star Trek, where Starfleet Academy cadets are faced with a no-win situation. The chances of the student's start-up project succeeding are about 1 in 100.

Having mentored winning Innovation ACT start-up teams for a few years and assessed TechLuancher students, what struck me was that the skills they learn are just as applicable in large organizations. If you are doing IT in a large organization then you need to know how to plan, cost and pitch a project (and fail most of the time). To that end I have starting producing mobile based e-learning to help with this.

Team 101 Tutotra Innovation Award Winner

Congratulations to Awais Bhattee and Eamon Weiner of "Team 101 Tutotra" who were one of the six teams to be awarded in the Innovation ACT at the finals last night. I mentored the team during the start-up competition, developing a product to help international students. For next year's competition I am working on  m-leaning innovation materials: students will be able to use mobile devices for studying aspects of innovation and then use these to participate in the live events.

Moodle Interests Tag Cloud for Team Building Exercise

The Innovation ACT competition ends this evening with the announcement of the winners. It seemed a good opportunity to think about how to use mobile technology to improve such start-up competitions.

Innovation ACT has a PARTICIPANT HANDBOOK, which lists the activities the students do. One explicitly involves the use of social media (on page 8 of the handbook). Teams get one point per week for a post in each of the five weekly workshops:

However, there may be scope for on-line activities in the 5 workshops and also the other events:

As an example, the first activity is "Team Hunting". Currently what the students do is answer three questions on a card and then walk around seeing what others have written, looking for team mates:

1. List 3 things you are passionate about or interested in.
2. List Some of Your Personal Strengths. EG. Skills, Experience, networks.
3. What are you looking for in potential team mates."
Instead, I suggest they could enter this into an on-line system, which would then show the possible matches visually. A very simple way to do this would be to use Moodle, which has provision for students to enter "Interests". The system will then show a photo of all students who share an interest. You don't have to program anything to do this, it comes standard:  There is also a "Tag Block" (aka Tag Cloud): 

So the live exercise might become:
  1. Enter three things you are passionate about or interested in, your Skills, Experience and networks into Moodle as "Interests",
  2. Select an interest from the Tag Cloud. Hold up your phone and use it to help find the people who share your interest.
Something more sophisticated might be possible with Social Media systems, but Moodle has the advantage that the information is limited to the participants.

Innovation ACT Pitch Night

The Innovation ACT Pitch Night (Innovation Noir) was held this evening at the Shine dome in Canberra. It was "Back to the Future" day but this setting was more "The day The Earth Stood Still" being in a building like a 1960s flying saucer.

Innovation ACT is a start-up business planning competition for university students in Canberra, created by ANU, but now backed by the ACT government with participants from other universities.

This evening a shortlist of teams presented their products. Each team has only a five minutes to impress a panel of judges, in front of hundreds of people, with a video camera recording. This is a high stress situation with the time limit for presentations tightly controlled.

The presentations were:

 1. Eternabooks: indestructible books for children.
 2. Recomeal "Shop Smarter. Eat Better" smart grocery list.
 3. Workhorse Finance: A website to help young people invest in the share market.
 4. HF Games Studio, with a game called "For King and Coinage".
 5. Project Cleopatra: Forex market.

 -  90 Day House*: Polystyrene core plywood wall low cost DIY house* Open house 2pm this Sunday.
 -  Sustainable Packaging Design*: "N-G"
 -  Team Mude Creative Agency*: Photography, Music, Video, Graphic Design.

 6. BringTeam+: Bringing like-minded students together for group work.
 7. Tutora#: Educational assistance for international students.
 8. Gradlife: Find rental accommodation for graduate students.
 9. Popular Choice: Help for consumers choosing products.
10. Certified Renewable: Certify businesses as using renewable energy.

The presenters have to get their message across is a clear and engaging way, without looking like a clone of Steve Jobs. Also the teams have to overcome the skepticism of the judges who have seen any number of web based business proposals before. The problem is that really good new business ideas either sound simple and obvious, or weird and impossible. The teams this evening did well. It is interesting that several of the teams are proposing products and services for postgraduate international students.

The winners will be announced at the Innovation ACT Awards Night, 31 October.

Events like this are taking place around the world every day, to help university students make the transition from study and research to business. Canberra has a unique advantage in that it has a government supported competition integrated with a co-working space and incubator (the "Canberra Innovation Network"). I am mentoring one team in the competition, am the customer for another and one team this year I mentored last year. In past years my teams have won the pitch. Also I have been a presenter, a competitor and am currently designing on-line learning materials to help.

This same approach can be used inside large companies and government organizations, to encourage innovation.

Speed Dating for Startups

Last night I took part in the "Get a Mentor" part of the Innovation ACT business model competition, held at Canberra Innovation Network's office. The Innovator ACT Mentors, each sat at a table (I am a mentor). Each team of higher education students then had five minutes to tell a mentor about their project. At the end of five minutes the teams moved to another mentor. The mentors noted which teams they wanted to work with and teams which mentors, so they can be matched up. This was an exhausting, but interesting experience, a bit like speed dating (not that I have tried that).

Some questions I kept asking teams were:
  1. What is the product or service?
  2. Who is the customer?
  3. Who is going to pay you?
  4. Are there more people on your team?
  5. Have you considered looking for a market beyond Canberra's university students?
  6. Is this another Mobile Internet App?

Business Planning Competition for Canberra University Students

Greetings from the Australian National University in Canberra, where Innovation ACT 2015, a business planning competition for Canberra's university students is being launched. Professors Michael Cardew-Hall and (Pro Vice-Chancellor, Innovation, ANU) and
Frances Shannon (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, University of Canberra).

Students are taken through a ten week program with one topic a week to produce business model. There are five weekend workshops (starting this weekend) and a series of weekly seminars. The first task for the students is to learn to work together and perhaps is the most valuable part of the program. The students also have to produce a pitch about their idea, which can be fun to watch.

As well as universities, IP Australia are supporting Innovation ACT. One interesting aspect of Innovation ACT is that anyone can participate. Only staff, students and graduates can enter the competition and win $50,000 in funding. Teams have to be at least 50% students.

There is a handbook for participants and another for mentors.

TechLauncher Teaching Innovation in Canberra

TechLauncher is an initiative of the Australian National University in Canberra, for students to develop professional skills working for a project for a year. Industry and Government re invited to contribute projects and mentors.

This is one of a number of initiatives ANU has around entrepreneurial, innovation and startup skills. I will be discussing "Innovations in Teaching Innovation" at the Graduate Lounge, University House, The Australian National University, 11th February 2015.

Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship in Technology Course Proposal

For some years I have been considering how to offer the students undertaking the "Innovation ACT" competition credit as part of a university degree. Inspired by my visit to UBCin Vancouver, I started work on such a course. Rather than approach universities and professional bodies in the usual way, I thought I would release the idea and see who is interested. The concept is reasonably simple: students would enroll in an on-line course and study the theory of innovation. They would then take part in an innovation competition, such as Innovation ACT, to experience the practice. Half of the students assessment would be for theory and half for the practical materials they prepare as part of the competition. To pilot this I would need six students to make a minimum student cohort (this could be two teams of three students, for example). Anyone interest, please let me know:

Proposal for a Course: Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship in Technology

This is a preliminary outline of a Technology Innovation course. Students would learn how to take an idea and turn it into a business proposal. They would learn theory online and then undertake practical work, using the format successfully applied in my course ICT Sustainability (Worthington, 2011). Students would have the option of undertaking their practical work as part of an innovation competition, such as Innovation ACT.

Background

In Canberra, University of Canberra and ANU already run a number of innovation courses. However, none of these are designed to be run in conjunction with innovation competitions. Also current courses expect attendance at classes in person, and tend to emphasize use of lectures and examinations, which do not suit the teaching of innovation.

Current Canberra Based Innovation Courses

University of Canberra Courses

University of Canberra (UoC) and ANU both offer innovation courses. UoC have courses as part of the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. A typical unit is “Managing Change and Innovation” (7776.3), offered in blended mode (on-line content with on campus attendance of up to thirty nine hours).
Learning Outcomes
1. understand critically a range of theories and practices of change management.
2. demonstrate the applicability of organizational change practices in different circumstances.
3. appreciate the complexities and challenges inherent in planning and managing organizational change.
4. be familiar with the nature of innovation and how to implement it

UBC run a two semester interdisciplinary capstone project (APSC 496) for business and engineering students (Kruchten, Lawrence, Dahl & Cubbon, 2011). The students are required to work in teams to produce a business plan. This course is much more extensive than envisaged for ANU CS. However, the textbooks used may be applicable:

Problems with Current Innovation Courses

Innovation courses offered in Canberra have largely the format of a conventional lecture and examination based university course, which is not suited to the topic of innovation. It is proposed to overcome this by flipped classroom: students learn the theory online, discuss it with their peers in online forms and then are required to apply it.
Also courses are not aligned with the requirements for accreditation by bodies such as the Australian Computer Society. To meet accreditation requirements, the new course would be aligned with SFIA Version 5:

What would be in an online innovation course?

The new course will develop the capability to identify and develop new computing based business ideas. Students will learn to identity strategic uses for information technology, applying systematic investigation, analysis, review and documentation to take an idea through the stages of development and proposal. Students are encouraged to take part in the Innovation ACT, or a similar innovation competition, and submit their competition entry for assessment.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this subject students will be able to :
  1. Investigate a strategic application of IT.
  2. Propose new ways of conducting business using IT.

  2. Canvas Report: Five to eight page report on development of plan (this is equivalent to 1,500 to 2,400 words of assessment, about 30% to 50% of the assessment)

  4. Pitch: Notes and visual materials for a five minute presentation. A video of the presentation can also be provided, but for academic purposes, the assessment will be based on the ntoes for the presentation, not the presentation itself (assessment 5% to 10%).
  5. Literature review: This would be in addition to the Innovation ACT deliverables, added to balance the assessment in the first half of the course and provide some academic grounding to the practical aspects (Two pages, 10%).
    1. Assessment

The assessment would be made up of:
  1. 20% for contributions to forums/exercises for ten weeks (2% per week for 12 weeks, with the best 10 counted)
  2. Mid semester assignment: “Investigation of a strategic application of IT”. Individual work of 2,000 words, plus references 40%
  3. End of course deliverables: Business proposal. Students are encouraged to undertake the work as part of Innovation ACT, or another innovation competition. However, the activity must take during the semester. May be performed in a group of up to six. 40%.

Students must achieve at least 10% for contributions to forums, 20% mid-semester and 20% final items to be eligible to pass the course (overall pass mark for course may be set lower, or higher than 50%).

Relevant Skills and Experience of the Designer

Tom Worthington has trained in the design of blended and online courses and assessment, as part of a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (ANU 2013) and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (CIT 2013). He received the ACS Canberra ICT award 2010 for the design of the course “ICT Sustainability), which has been run by ANU and Athabasca University (Canada), since 2009. Tom was the Defence Project Manager for the DBQ Windows Project, federally funded to develop a graphical user interface for Australian database software (Worthington, 1994). He has evaluated applications for innovation grants for the Department of Industry, acted as a consultant for patent applications and provided advice on web design for the Beijing Olympics. Tom has been a speaker and mentor for Innovation ACT, on the organising team for GovHack and GovCamp Canberra and a judge for Random Hacks of Kindness (Sydney).

Prototypes for Innovation

Greetings from the Entry 29 Co-working Space in Canberra, where the Innovation ACT Workshop on "Developing Prototype Solutions: Managing Uncertainty" is being held. Teams of students from Canberra universities are being taken through how to prototype, as part of developing their product or service. A prototype is used to try out an idea. It need not be a physical object. But a prototype needs to function to some extent, otherwise it is called a Mockup.

Teaching Innovation at UBC

While in Vancouver for ICCSE 2014 I dropped in on Philippe Kruchten at UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is involved with the "New Venture Design" course (APSC 486), where engineering and business students learn to produce a business plan for a product. The students are encouraged to enter a innovation competition or program as part of the course. An example of such a competition is Innovation ACT. Unfortunately I am not aware of any of Canberra's universities incorporating the competition in any of their courses or programs.

Teaching Innovation in Canberra

Greetings from the Australian National University in Canberra, where the Innovation ACT 2014 Launch is taking place. For the last few years, the ACT Government has sponsored this competition to encourage Canberra's Higher Education students to learn how to turn their ideas into businesses. The completion was devised by ANU's Engineering and Computer Science College. Previously I have talked at the event and been a participant and later a mentor. This year I am designing a university course which will award credit for students undertaking this competition, or similar ones. Some argue that innovation cannot be taught in a formal course, it has to be experienced. However, I think it should be feasible to teach the theory in academic classes and then have the students innovate in practice (much as happens in architecture and design schools at university). If all goes well the new course will be available from second semester 2015. There are numerous innovation startup books , but I hope to avoid making the students read any of them. Universities interesting in running the course can contact me for details.

Innovation ACT has a format similar other "start-up" competitions. Teams attend presentations and workshops to learn how to prepare a pitch and business plan and then compete in various stages, winning prizes. The Innovation ACT competition broke with tradition by having only two short speeches at the launch. Most of the time was taken up with a short pitch competition. The first two were "InGiv" and "Butterfly Effect", proposing companies to assist social enterprise (that is non-profit organisations). There seems to be a lot of innovations with start-up companies offering services to non-profit organisations. The third Tradesmin was for small trades companies (an example of re-intermediation). Bio-Mine was offering authenticated electronic documents (I could not see how this was different to the Digitary certificates issued by ANU). BeeHub was to offer FAQs for university students. "Swap" was a barter system and "Hidden Talent" an online art gallery. The Winners were: 1. Bio-Mine; 2. Tradesmin; 3. InGive and BeeHub.
